| Culgaith is a level crossing on the Carlisle Settle
line now. In the past it had a small station and a goods yard.
| To me it reminds me of many teenage years, cycling from Penrith the 7 1/2 miles to the Culgaith box where a family friend - Mr. Jimmy Richardson worked as one of the signalmen. Whilst there I would eat my sandwiches and 'spot' the trains coming through. Not a busy job even then. | ||
| There were more than one of the 'Steam Specials' that I photographed back then - 'Leander,' 'Duchess of Hamilton' and the 'Union of South Africa' to name but a few. |

The layout I hope to build will be my first larger layout. It is proposed to be on 4 connecting boards. The track will run from the tunnel below the 'Box to a fictional road bridge at the other side of the 'Box. The tunnel and the road bridge will provide a chance for the double track to go round to a 'hidden' fiddle yard. Apart from the fictional road bridge it is hoped that decent research will provide decent photo's of the area to base everything on.
I have the track plan thanks to an excellent book - 'Stations and Structures of the Carlisle to Settle Railway' by V. R. Anderson and G.K. Fox - and numerous photos of the station buildings.

I would be eternally grateful for any other photo's or information that people have of Culgaith Box and the crossing. Especially of the goods yard as the track was removed and I have been unsuccessful in finding many pictures of the area at this time. Any photo's can be e-mailed to me by clicking on the button below. If you would like me to supply a snail mail address then please e-mail first.
