Yn y Coed twinned
with Unter den Baumen
Yn y Coed twinned with Unter den Baumen has developed into a multinational layout, with one continuous track, but which will take two different modelling scales. The translation for both the Welsh and German twin towns can be summarised as in or amongst the trees. The
layout was acquired by Ken at Zedex in 2007. It is a continuous oval and
figure of eight z gauge track which once was in Osborn’s model railways
shop in Abingdon. The track bed was left in situ and scenery and back scene added including over 80 trees most from Steve at SiST trees. It is able to run either a Welsh narrow gauge Nn3 train, or a German z gauge train or a French Nm railcar, plus a visiting US locomotive. This is a different concept to Carohay which is dual gauge, i.e. 2 different gauges running to one modelling scale N gauge. For Carohay both gauges are visible at the same time. For Yn y Coed, being a single track, only one gauge is ever visible so depending what is running you are either in Wales. France or Germany, and as there are no buildings or people on the layout, it becomes much easier to imagine being amongst the trees. The
layout is 114 cm x 43 cm. It has a disused siding which could be turned
into a passing loop, and you can see part of a former track bed down by
the water. The layout made its first public appearance at the West
Midlands N Gauge Club
meeting in November 2007 and completed during 2008. The
Nn3 freight rolling stock has been bought from USA and Bob
Hunt in Canada who also produced the flat bed wagon with
Marklin couplings at one end and Microtrains
at the other, as well as providing the mineral wagons. A
member of AFAN
in France produced the Nm railcar body for me which runs on a former
Marklin electric locomotive chassis. The visiting American locomotive is
from Microtrains. Work continues to get working passenger narrow gauge rolling stock using Kestrel bodies and z Club GB chassis. Completed Photographs - Winter 2008
